For the newbies: a weblog is an online journal. Blog is short for weblog. Now you know.
This particular weblog is a collection of interesting links that I have surfed across. Things that are worth remembering, or reporting to the masses. Also, some tidbits about my life may make an appearance ;)

Well, I've been getting along pretty well in the department despite my broken wrist. It sure is annoying, though. I have an increased level of compassion for my patients now. One of my friends who is a medical illustrator drew the bones of the wrist on the cast. It makes it easier to show people what I did :)

On the female front, Christy and I split up. Vacations seem to encourage this with me. I think it's because of the added intensity of a week together. She is a great girl, and so I've come to the conclusion that I'm just not ready for a serious relationship right now.

So in the meantime, I think I'll get back into music, 'we want a lady in the street but a freak in the bed to say..' Yeah

I think I'll re-do my homepage to put the blog as a start page, and add on some more links, like my shoutcast radio station right into the sidebar.

Alrighty! So Christy and I flew out to Park City on Mar 5th to do some skiing/boarding. I had a blast at Park City Mountain Resort on the 6th, and then at The Canyons on the 7th, right up until I collided with a tree and broke my right hand. Intra-articular distal radius fracture. What a bummer. I told Christy to go skiing without me, but she wouldn't have that, so instead we rented a car and drove down to Moab and Arches National Park. Fantastic weather, and beatiful scenery. I'll get around to posting some pictures of all this later...things are a lot slower going when you cannot use your dominate hand. One of my orthopedic resident friends changed my splint to a cast earlier tonight, so at least it's a little more manageable. I'm going to work tomorrow...it's very difficult to write, so I don't know how I'll do in the ED, but we'll see.
In other news, I just found out that one of my college friends, Josh Lamkin, is playing on April 17th at the
3 Rivers Music and Heritage Festival over in Columbia, SC. Another of my college friends has a sister getting married down in Sea Island, GA at the same time. I'll have to work something out. Both sound like they would be a good time.

I have been watching mad South Park the past week or so. I'm trying to accumulate every South Park episode (guide). That show is hilarious.
Meanwhile, I'm really excited about tearing up the slopes in Park City next week. Just a few more days!

I just finished creating a new blog for the mcg emergency medicine department. I plan on this being a replacement for the current homepage in the ED. We'll see if it flies. I think it will. Time for bed, now....
Oh yeah...I just finished my month of MICU. Everyone kept asking me if I liked it. Sure, there's procedures, and patients that are sick as stink, so it's fun in that regards, but rounding on the same people everyday? boring! I couldn't wait to get back downstairs :)

I'm becoming a fan of Tim Russert, and certainly also of Ralph Nader, who was interviewed tonight: MSNBC - Transcript for Feb. 22th. I'm gonna have to go learn about Ralph a little more at his website. I don't think he has a prayer of winning this election, and, in reality, there's a good chance he will harm the Democrats by pulling independent voters (like myself) away from whoever the Democrats nominate. I think that Ralph's points in his interview are absolutely on target. Also, I pulled up an article that I found disturbing when I first read about it, long before the chumps who signed got put into office by Bush #2.

Monty Python MtG Cards. I've never really played Magic: The Gathering, but I know it's been wildly successful (albeit if only in certain groups of folks), but I just found a link to Magic cards using Monty Python. This could be worth checking out!

I got a postcard in the mail the other day from
Global Medical Staffing. They pay for physicians to go on a sabbatical in various locaitons--mostly in Australia and New Zealand. I looked up their website and discovered that an FP who is currently on the South Island has started a weblog about his trip. Pretty cool. I'm definitely considering it. Australia and New Zealand are awesome, plus my sister and brother-in-law will prob. be living in Melbourne, Aus, starting later this year.

Spent some time today updating the 'ol blog. Added in a comments option based on links that I found on another emergency medicine resident's blog that I discovered. There's a link to her blog in the blogrolling section. Blogrolling is another upgrade today. Until lately, I hadn't seen any 'professional' blogrolling...most of it was groups of kids who all shared blogs. But I found some medicine sites that blogroll, and it inspired me. Also, I tweaked the formatting slightly as well, and I think it just cleaned up the site a little bit.

In other news, I also bought a snowboard (Sims Nexus 2004) and bindings (Lamar MX 30) today on eBay for just under $200 (incl. s/h). I thought that was a pretty good deal! I bought a Burton bag, helmet, leash, etc, from another website the other day. Total outfitting costs around $300 (plus the LTD boots I bought last year for $90). I'm getting excited about my snowboard vacation that I'm going on in early March.

Christy and I are going out to Park City for 4 days of skiing/boarding (she says she's gonna try boarding). I love it. I can't imagine going back to skis. One board is so much more fun. And now that I'm gonna have a helmet this year, I'll be even more fearless on the jumps! ;) OK, so I only landed about 3 or 4 of the 15 or so I attempted last year. But damn, they're fun! And this trip will technically only make about the 10th day that I've gone boarding. I plan on changing that, though. When all's said and done here in Augusta, I'm gonna live closer to the snow!

so I've been meaning to update this page, or, at least to put a page on my website in general, with a picture of the rock climbing wall I built back in Nov/Dec. (it took a little while :) It's an 8x8 foot wall that is on a hinge at the bottom (arrow) and anchor chains at the top, so that it will bend out and allow me to climb on an incline. I also hung a pull-up bar near it (that's the copper pipe suspended like a trapeze that I had left over from a different project). Yep. Gonna get huge.

also, we had a bad ice storm here the other week, and I let my music server/den computer stay down for awhile. It's back up now, and broadcasting...the newest good band I've come across is Garage-a-Trois. Good funk band that spontaneously formed a few years back in New Orleans. If you listen, maybe you'll hear some.

MSNBC - Meet the Press - Transcript for Feb. 8th I don't watch tv much (I don't have cable, I only have a cable modem), so I missed an interview of Dubya with Tim Russert last night. But, I read the transcript just now, and I just can't imagine having this joker in charge of our country for another 4 yrs. When I voted for Gore last year, my father told me he was 'dissappointed' in me! ;) But I just couldn't vote for someone I didn't think was intelligent. Georgie continues to reaffirm that my assessment was correct. I don't know which one of the democrats running right now is the best candidate--I'm probably the biggest fan of Clark, but what I REALLY wish is that there was a winnable independent. I can't stand all the partisan BS.

I got on a political kick the other day and spent quite a bit of time at Move On, which, although it has democratic leanings, really seems to just be a progressive political website, and I'm all about that. They sponsored a commercial contest the other day, which was quite funny. Entries were 30 seconds or less, and they can be found at BushIn30Seconds.com. They're worth a look.

On a totally non-political note, ePocrates, the software I had been using to keep up with drugs (dosage strengths, etc) has fouled up, and I've spent quite a few hours the past few days trying to get it to work. Normal, well-produced software should not just up and stop working one day. The company has gone from providing a simple, free, well-used and liked program to a bulky program with time limits on the free version. So I can't just use my old copy anymore, and this is the second time in recent months this 'new' version has gone sour! grrrrrr. I think it's time to bag epocrates and find a competitor.

Also, the night kicked off one of my favorite TV shows, Survivor: All-Stars. I missed a couple of seasons of the show, but I'm gonna try and watch this one. It looks like a lot of fun.

This site is amazing. You type in the name of a musician or music group you like, and it shows you names of bands that have similar music (for instance, type in Coldplay) musicplasma : the music visual search engine. It is really interesting and will likely provide you with the names of some new artists to enjoy.

GreenvilleOnline.com - Easley High grad first woman pilot killed in Iraq

     11:15:51 PM

Saturday, January 03, 2004
I've just been informed that one of my college friends was killed in Iraq yesterday. She was a helicopter pilot for the Army. CNN.com - U.S. soldier killed as copter shot down in Iraq - Jan. 2, 2004 She was a great person, I'm proud to have known her. Having a young friend killed in this ridiculously untimely war really brings it home, and further angers me that Rumsfeld and company talked the nation into it after 9/11. Obviously Saddam was a sick bastard who needed to be dealt with and had needed to have been dealt with for over 10 years, but to go and invade the country without international support was absurd. And now look at the mess we've created. Screw you, Bush. I want my friend Kimberly back.
